Ohio St Survives Naval Incursion on Olentangy Waters

31-27 was the final score at the Horseshoe.  The Buckeyes struggled at times with Navy’s triple option and their surprising willingness to attempt forward passes but had still built a 15 point lead and driving with 6:30 remaining in the game.  That would be wear the wagon came unhitched as Tressel had a brain lock and failed to kick a field goal that would’ve provided an 18 point margin and a 4th & 2 running play failed.  Then the defense had brain lock and let Navy hit a deep pass to traverse the 85 yards in a single play to draw within 8.  Then Pryor threw a bad high pass over the middle and it was intercepted.    Then Ohio St let Navy drive the field and score again.  But this is where things turned back good when Navy surprisingly tried a pass play for the 2-point conversion and the bad pass became a pick-2 for the Buckeyes.  Recover the onside kick and game salted away.  Finally.

I am not worried about the closeness of the game because I fully expected Navy to provide a tough game.  The triple option is not something the Buckeyes see often nor can you simulate it in practice with your scout team.  Also, being the first game meant that the odd missed assignment is more likely to happen.  And, Navy is a solid good football team.  That having been said I didn’t much like how the 4th quarter unfolded; I would like to see the Buckeyes close out games better than that.  But a win is a win and now they can get ready for the USC showdown next Saturday in primetime.

In other college football action Iowa survived a real scare and a real bizzare ending blocking not one, but two Northern Iowa field goal attempts in the past 7 seconds.  Sam Bradford gets hurt and Oklahoma can’t hold off BYU.  Alabama looked better than I was expecting on offense in beating Virginia Tech.  Michigan and Notre Dame both got wins against inferior opponents.  There was an absurd roughing penalty against Georgia in their loss to Oklahoma St where a guy did what he is supposed to do to make sure the receiver didn’t catch the ball.  If that is illegal college football might become hard to watch.  And a bunch of other stuff happened too.
