Its an important factor to keep in mind.  Private insurance companies are for-profit entities watching a bottom line.  The federal government, as any deficit hawk can tell you, hasn’t cared about its bottom line since the days of Andrew Jackson.  So which one do you think is more likely to approve your expensive and necessary course of treatment?
