Obama Comments on Gates Case

At the end of a national TV press conference devoted to health care reform, President Obama did field a question on the recent arrest of noted Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.  And it wasn’t the sort of noncommital deferential claptrap you would expect to hear.  He fully took Gates’ side and stated the Cambridge, MA police “acted stupidly”.  Now, I happen to basically agree, though they were called to a suspected breaking and entering and Gates was apparently belligerent; at a certain point the police cannot tolerate disrespect any further.  But I was a bit surprised that Obama’s comments were that pointed, and I assume the conservative blogosphere and talk shows will become inflamed.
