Leading Lady

The fily and prerace favorite Rachel Alexandra was able to hold off charging Derby winner Mine That Bird and capture the Black-Eyed Susans.  Calvin Borel is now 2/3 of the way to a jockey Triple Crown (hey, we haven’t had the real thing in my functional memory, so I’ll take what I can get).  I couldn’t help thinking it appropriate that a girl would go off at 9-5 odds, even though, so far as I know, Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Dabne Coleman were not in attendance at Pimlico.

Rachel Alexandra came down from the 13 gate and had the lead from the first turn and all the way around the track.  And being somewhat (though not much) smaller than the boys its probably just as well she wasn’t getting jostled around in traffic.  As for Mine That Bird, it tried to move up the rail just like at Churchill Downs but it got froze out, had to swing wide, and ran out of track to real in Rachel Alexandra.  Based on the way he came on strong at the end, my hunch is that Bird would beat Alexandra at the 1 1/2 mile Belmont in 3 weeks.  But I guess we’ll find out then.

Either way, its another year now without a Triple Crown winner, which makes 3 decades.  But there was a long gap before Secretariat opened a [Seattle] Slew of triple crowns in the 1970s, so maybe we’ll have one Affirmed soon.
