Clock Management in The NFL

I would quibble a bit with the leading scenario of the Giants/Bears game in that I hate trusting it to a field goal kicker if I don’t have to.  I run the ball, and if the Bears waste time stuffing me 3 times, then I kick when the down and the clock compel me to you.  As John Madden would say, if you play for the kick, you are giving yourself only one shot at winning.  If you go for the TD and then the FG, you have given yourself two shots at winning.  Of course, the Bears can choose to let you score on 1st down so they have time left.  Its all part of the game.
