Pirates, Indians Make Offseason Moves

Both the Pirates and Indians made trades in the past 36 hours to move out players that had disappointing 2008 campaigns.  The Pirates dumped catcher Ronny Paulino on the Philadelphia Phillies, getting a AAA catcher in return.  The Indians sent OF Franklin Gutierrez to the Mariners in exchange for a Mets relief pitcher and an infielder with more limited Major League experience from Seattle (part of the trade that saw JJ Putz go from Seattle to Queens).

Part of me is sorry to see the Indians part ways with Gutierrez, but he had a terrible October 2007 and never seemed to recover from that.  Hopefully for him a change in scenery will do him some good.  And, of course, hopefully the players Cleveland got in return prove useful.  It also appears the Indians are close to signing free agent closer Kerry Wood.  He would obviously solidify the back end for the Tribe . . . if he stays healthy that is.
