Army Hiding Friendly Fire Incident in Iraq?

From Thursday’s Salon.com:

I guess my main question would be why would the Army try to cover for this friendly fire incident, if that is what it was.  The “fog of war” excuse that is being used to claim the soldiers were confused as to where the fatal mortar round came from can just as easily be used to explain a mistaken shot from the tank.  Everyone would say, “oh that really sucks” and move on with life.  So either it is a misunderstanding, and that was routine shredding (not likely) or there is something deeper going on.
