May It Never Happen Again

Monday October 20th marked the 35th anniversary of one of the saddest nights in American political history, the Saturday Night Massacre.  Angry at the course of the investigation into Watergate, President Nixon ordered the closure of the investigation by special counsel Archibald Cox.  Refusing to carry out those orders Attorney General Elliott Richardson resigned, and also refusing to carry out those orders, Deputy Attorny General William Ruckelshaus was fired.  Solicitor General Robert Bork then carried out the order to ouster Cox and Nixon’s naked abuse of executive power was consummated.  It is a shameful episode in American history and we should all hope nothing like that happens again.
