Freddie Barnes to Play in Shrine Game

January 5, 2010

http://www.bgsufalcons.com/news/2010/1/5/FB_0105100708.aspx

Personally I think he has a decent shot to contribute in the NFL, moreso than some of the experts seem to.  Of course time will tell on that one.  Either way, Falcon nation appreciates his 4 years of play at Bowling Green and wish him success!

Bowling Green Vandal-ized in Humanitarian Bowl

December 30, 2009

Apparently the Falcon defense thought college football games last 59:28, and not 60:00 like they actually do.  After a lax Idaho defense allowed Freddie Barnes to score on a 50 yard TD pass with 32 seconds left to give BG a 42-35 lead, Idaho ran the ensuing kickoff back to their own 39 with 26 seconds still remaining.  Should’ve been a simple matter of containing Idaho to a few short passes and defending a hail mary on the final play.  Inexcusably they allowed a deep ball to be completed to the 16, then a sliding and somewhat disputed TD reception with 4 seconds remaining.  At that point failing to prevent a 2 point conversion was practically a fait accompli.  No blitz and no one thought to cover the back of the end zone.  Game over.

That reprehensible defensive effort overshadows a fitting end to Freddie Barnes’ collegiate career; 16 catches to give him an FBS record 155 for the season.  He’s heading to the NFL, but the rest of the program is heading to an offseason of what if’s after pissing away what would have been the MAC’s first bowl win in 14 tries.  Oh well, it was a very entertaining game, perhaps the best of the bowl season thus far.  But its disappointing to see the defense look that awful in that key situation.

Lady Falcons Handle Youngstown State

December 21, 2009

73-45 was the final score at YSU’s Beeghly Center. Kids 12 and under got in for free and I believe some area schools made a field trip of it, hence the 11am start time. The Falcons did seem a bit sluggish early after a fast break layup on the opening tip gave them a lead they would never relinquish 3 seconds into the contest, but it was still only 5-2 at the first media timeout. A spurt out of that break gave BG a lead in the 5-8 point range that they held for awhile before a surge late in the first half gave them a more comfortable 17 point lead at halftime, and YSU was never able to make inroads after that. It was a balanced attack with most of the roster getting appreciable minutes. Lauren Prochaska was held in check in the 1st half but she did get some scores in the 2nd frame. Tracy Prontius never had to get going behind the arc but she got several breakaway baskets off of clean steals, as she was frankly too quick for the Penguins guards. Breske and Nurse both contributed as did a number of other players as Curt Miller, like I said, used this pre-Christmas contest to get players rest and work respectively.

I feel confident that I didn’t see BG’s best effort this morning, and it wasn’t needed. I know they can light up better from the perimeter. They did concede more baskets inside 8 feet, especially in the 1st half, than I would like to see. Of course they have time to work on that between now and early March.

Hamilton Donates $500k to BGSU Scholarship

December 19, 2009

Former Olympic skating gold medalist and Bowling Green native Scott Hamilton has donated $500,000 to the University:

http://www.bgsufalcons.com/news/2009/12/17/HOCKEY_1217095535.aspx

As I have written before, I fervently hope a way to save the BGSU hockey program, and restore it to past glory, can be found.

Barnes Finalist for Biletnikoff

November 23, 2009

Bowling Green wideout Freddie Barnes has been named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award given to the nation’s best receiver. He joins Texas’ Jordan Shipley and Notre Dame’s Golden Tate as finalists:

http://www.bgsufalcons.com/news/2009/11/23/FB_1123094442.aspx

One assumes he is probably an underdog against those two BCS school receivers, but its a great honor just to be a finalist. Way to go Freddie!

Bowling Green Hockey Wins Game By Cheating

November 1, 2009

By using a shooter, who scored, in a shootout Friday night against Omaha who should not have been allowed:

http://www.bgsufalcons.com/news/2009/10/31/HOCKEY_1031090004.aspx

I now consider Bowling Green athletics even, balancing a win stolen from the men’s basketball team against Buffalo a couple years ago when it was decided the game wasn’t over, then was assessed a technical when they didn’t return from the locker room fast enough.
