Seems not all is well between the ownership of the Washington Nationals and the District. Substantially, the Lerners are not paying rent as they should be and not paying sales tax revenues as quickly as DC officials would likely:
I of course am not expert on all the agreements, but, it seems to me, if the contractors had the ballpark fully and completely ready for play well in advance of this inaugural season, and are finishing other items, like team offices, in a timely fashion, the city is not in breach of its agreement and should be paid rent. As for the sales tax, wasn’t this clearly understood in advance? Frankly, and again, I’m not a lawyer or familiar with these agreements, but shouldn’t the Nationals pay sales tax at, you know, the point of sale? If someone buys a ticket for August 30th’s game on May 21st, May 21st is when the team earned revenue and the controlling governmental entity should get their tax money accordingly.
